Online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au has refunded punters who backed Australian boxer Jay Opetaia their bets, after the 17-year-old star was controversially judged to have lost his Olympic games bout against world number two Teymur Mammadov.
Five judges ruled that Otepaia lost 12-11, despite experts suggesting the young star had pulled off a massive upset.
“In our opinion, the decision was wrong and the young Aussie boxer and his coach have every right to be furious,” sportsbet.com.au’s Ben Hawes said.
“The least we can do is refund punters who backed Opetaia their bets. It doesn’t change the result, but in our eyes, it’s the right thing to do.”
